Kilimanjaro COVID-19 Protocols
Private Groups

These protocols are being revised periodically as more information becomes available.

Using protocols suggested by the WHO, the CDC, the Adventure Travel Trade Association, and Tanzania's government, these are the steps being taken in Tanzania to keep our guest's and staff's safety a top priority.

Safety measures in our standard operating procedures will focus on:

  • Social distancing.
  • Frequent hand washing or sanitizing.
  • Sanitizing common areas.
  • Utilizing personal protective equipment such as face masks and gloves.
Your Arrival To Tanzania
  • Please bring your supply of sanitizing wipes and gels and use them frequently in airports and on your international flights. We strongly urge you to wear a mask throughout your journey.
  • Please bring your supply of masks, either disposable or cloth, for the duration of your trip.
  • All guests entering Tanzania will have to provide contact information for the duration of their stay and confirm that they do not have symptoms of COVID-19 and have not knowingly been exposed to someone with COVID-19.
Transfer Vehicles
  • Vehicles will be sanitized before your group enters the vehicle.
  • The Barking Zebra representative and your driver will wear a face-covering.
  • Your bags will be sanitized before they are loaded into your vehicle.
  • You will be required to sanitize your hands before entering the vehicle.
  • You will be asked to wear a face-covering while in the vehicle.
The Kilimanjaro Team
  • All Kilimanjaro crew members will undergo training for the COVID19 Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Crew members will not wear masks while on the trail.
  • Your guide and crew will practice social distance protocols throughout the entire climb.
  • All crew members will wear masks in camp and when in a group setting.
Tents and Gear
  • All camping gear will be sanitized before the climb begins.
  • You will be assigned a tent and sleeping pad that you will use throughout the entire climb. You will be assigned a porter to carry only your gear.
  • Because you are traveling with a private group you can share a tent with anyone in this group.
  • A special Covid manager will sanitize your tent and gear before you arrive at camp each day.
  • The Covid manager will ensure all hand washing stations are sanitized regularly.
  • The toilet assistant will ensure that the portable toilets and toilet tents are cleaned and sanitized regularly.
Dining on the Mountain
  • Only chefs and assistant cooks will handle food preparation.
  • Waiters will wear masks and gloves when serving food.
  • The dining tent, chairs, and table will be sanitized before climbers enter the tent in the morning and before arrival at the camp in the afternoon.
During Your Climb
  • You must wear a mask when interacting with your guide or crew.
  • Your temperature will be checked twice a day. Once in the morning during your “daily health check” and again in the afternoon when you arrive at camp.
  • While trekking, social distancing will be maintained. It is not necessary to wear a mask in this situation.
  • Wash and sanitize your hands often. Use the hand washing stations at camp in combination with hand sanitizer.
  • Avoid touching your face. Although this practice is urged during any Kilimanjaro climb, it has never been more applicable.
