Our Kilimanjaro porters are the lifeline up the mountain. Without the dedicated efforts of our hard-working porters, Mt. Kilimanjaro would just be a pretty picture postcard in the distance. It’s a big job keeping the trek comfortable and well supplied. You may not realize it, but for a group of ten climbers, there are over 50 crew members working in front and behind the scenes to ensure success.
However, there are quite a few budget Kilimanjaro outfitters who don’t share our view of a well-run climb. They cut corners where they can, and it’s usually the porters who suffer – poor gear, worse pay, and terrible working conditions.
Not us. Since our beginnings, Barking Zebra has made it our mission to treat our mountain crews with dignity and raise their living standards. Our crews are well-fed, just like our guests.
Conditions on Kili can be challenging – we make sure our porters are equipped with the proper clothing, gear, and comfortable tents. We guarantee everyone receives their full pay, even if they must descend early due to illness or injury.
Hard to believe, but some companies pocket their guests’ tips, not distributing them to their crews! We’ve adopted a system where all gratuities distributed directly from the climbers to the porters and guides.
We even look beyond the mountain to make sure our dedicated teams have reliable transportation to and from the mountain.
